Fun Mountain Hike up Wolfhuisberg on the farm
Dragon's Keep — Saturday 13 October 2007

Starting out at the foot of Wolfhuisberg           Amazing view of Pearly Beach from the top

A number of the members from the Pearly Beach Angling & Recreational Club and the Strandveld Voetslaanklub, as well as a few visitors to the area, got together on the glorious Saturday morning of 13 October to "challenge" the Wolfhuisberg in Pearly Beach. Sharon Dittmer and Rodney Collyer were kind enough to open their farm, Dragon's Keep, to the public for the day and have us enjoy the spectacular hike, amazing view and their down-to-earth hospitality.

The hikers were from all ages, the eldest being Desire Pitzer, 74 years of age. Amazingly enough 8 of the hikers were 60 years or older and the average age was 57. The over 60's certainly showed the younger people a thing or two about hiking and energy levels.

Rodney and his Staffie, Skud, supervised the water point..... fresh crystal water from the underground stream running across their land, and a welcome sight on this hot morning. The hike was estimated to take ±2 hours, but the hikers enjoyed it so much, they lingered for a while at the top, enjoying the view, the fynbos and the peace and quiet.

Back at "base camp" the sausage was sizzling at the hands of Allan and Maggie and the drinks (yes, water and coffee) were ready, waiting for the thirsty hikers. Everybody was ravenous and enjoyed their boerewors rolls and especially Sharon's homemade chilli sauce. After enjoying the food and drink and discussing "the next time", everybody departed, looking forward to putting their feet up for a bit.

Beautiful view of Uilenkraalsmond from the top of Wolfhuisberg

The Pearly Beach Angling & Recreational Club would like to thank the members from the Strandveld Voetslaanklub who changed their plans to join us and gave us valuable advice regarding the preparation and "grading" of mountain hikes. Thank you to Sharon and Rodney for their hospitality and preparation work and all their other helping hands. A big thank you to John Kirsten who provided his services as paramedic free of charge. And last, but not least, thank you very much to the Pearly Beach Online website, Gansbaai Herald and Gansbaai Courant for promoting the hike.

We will definitely let you know when the next hike will take place.
